An esterified form of α-ketoglutarate; increases intracellular levels of α-ketoglutarate and decreases intracellular ATP levels in U2OS human osteosarcoma cells cultured in complete- or nutrient-free media at 5 mM; inhibits autophagy and decreases in intracellular levels of acetyl-CoA in serum- and nutrient-deprived cells; decreases cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in a thoracic aortic constriction-induced mouse model of cardiac pressure overload at 300 mg/kg; reduces serum AST and ALT levels and hepatic fibrosis in a rat model of CCl4-induced liver fibrosis
