An essential amino acid; blood and brain levels are increased and associated with cognitive impairments and other neurological symptoms in patients with phenylketonuria; inhibits NMDA-induced currents in rat cultured hippocampal neurons (IC50 = 1.71 mM); assembles into fibrils in vitro which are cytotoxic to PC12 and CHO cells from 1.16-15 mM
