An active metabolite of L-arginine and a non-proteinogenic amino acid; formed from arginine by arginase I during the final step of the urea cycle; acts as an alternate precursor to L-glutamate in the biosynthesis of proline; exogenous administration delays the onset of ethanol-induced ataxia and decreases ethanol-induced sleeping time in rats at 111 mg/kg
