Bottlenecks in the availability of sample collection devices and transport media have caused major problems for some COVID testing centres. Shortages of biosafety cabinets in some labs mean that the safe handling of infectious samples has been challenging, limiting the number of tests that can be carried out. The DNA/RNA Shield Swab Collection Device and DNA/RNA Shield Saliva/Sputum Collection Device (sputum collection only) from Zymo Research are CE-IVD marked devices which have also been EUA granted to Zymo Research as part of their COVID testing workflow. These devices contain the DNA/RNA shield preservation and pathogen inactivation reagent.

We can provide large numbers of CE marked sample collection devices, including saliva collection devices (R1210-E) and collection tubes with swab (R1107-E), filled with the DNA/RNA shield sample preservation/pathogen inactivating reagent, to meet your requirements. Alternatively, bulk quantities of the DNA/RNA shield reagent are available, to use with your own collection devices, or individually wrapped swabs, to use with your own medium. DNA/RNA Shield has been rigorously tested for its ability to deactivate a wide range of pathogens, including MERS coronavirus, Ebola and M. tuberculosis, without the need for additional steps, such as heat-treatment, homogenisation or alcohol sterilisation. In an independent study, the virucidal activity was shown to inactivate murine parvovirus1. DNA/RNA Shield abides by the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines for pathogen inactivation2.
