Phagocytosis is the engulfment of particles by the cell’s plasma membrane. It may be assayed by measuring the engulfment of a cell substrate. Traditional assays use erythrocytes with the engulfed substrates manually counted under a microscope. This process is tedious and time-consuming, can be somewhat inaccurate, and is not amenable to high throughput.

Cambridge Bioscience offers the Cytoselect™ phagocytosis assay from Cell Biolabs as more accurate, high-throughput alternative to the standard phagocytosis assay. This assay does not involve subjective manual counting of erythrocytes with cells instead being lyzed and detected by the proprietary erythrocyte substrate in a microtiter plate reader. This kit is ideal for screening TLR ligands, phagocytosis activators or inhibitors.
