Reactive Oxygen Species

The Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) produced in cells include hydrogen peroxide and free radicals such as the hydroxyl radical and the superoxide anion. ROS are particularly unstable and will react rapidly and non-specifically with most biological molecules.

ROS damage cells by starting chain reactions such as lipid peroxidation or DNA or protein oxidation. DNA damage, if it remains unrepaired, may introduce mutations with the potential to facilitate neoplasias, while protein damage may cause enzyme inhibition, denaturation and protein degradation.

Cambridge Bioscience offer a range of assays and tools to study and measure Reactive Oxygen Species.
