Coagulation Cascade
The co-ordination of blood clotting involves a delicate balance between the clot forming coagulation cascade and the proteolytic clot dissolving fibrinolytic pathway. A variety of disorders are associated with the inability to regulate these processes. Failure to form blood clots, as seen in haemophilia, can predispose individuals to uncontrolled haemorrhaging whereas pathological clotting, as seen in atherosclerosis and deep vein thrombosis, can result in organ damage and organ failure with further complications such as embolisms in downstream organs.
