GelRed™ & GelGreen™ Nucleic Acid StainsIf you are looking for a safe alternative to Ethidium Bromide, without compromising on performance, then you should try GelRed™ or GelGreen™ nucleic acid stains. These gels stains are widely recognised as the best alternatives to Ethidium Bromide for the following reasons:
Unsurpassed Stability & Superior Sensitivity Most of the current commercial gel stains are lacking in one or more aspects. Ethidium Bromide offers acceptable sensitivity but is highly mutagenic and requires a destaining step to reduce background fluorescence. SYBR™ Green I and SYBR™ Gold have been promoted as the most sensitive gel stains, but degrade rapidly under the alkaline conditions of commonly used electrophoresis buffers or in the matrix of precast gels, resulting in unreliable gel staining. GelRed™ and GelGreen™ overcome most of the drawbacks encountered by the current commercial gel stains. Perfect Compatibility GelRed™ - The direct alternative to Ethidium Bromide, has a major excitation peak at around 300 nm and a red emission at around 595 nm and can be optimally excited with a common 300 nm UV transilluminator while its emission is completely compatible with either a standard EB filter or a SYBR filter. GelGreen™ - The direct alternative to SYBR Green I, has UV absorption between 250 nm and 300 nm and a strong absorption peak centred around 500 nm. Thus it is compatible with either a 254 nm UV transilluminator or a gel reader equipped with visible light excitation (such as a 488 nm laser-based gel scanner or a Dark Reader). This format of GelRed and GelGreen is ideal for users employing pre-casting (addition of GelRed or GelGreen directly to the gel) or post staining approached to nucleic acid visualisation. Improved Safety Equally important is the potentially improved safety of GelRed and GelGreen over EB. See the results of the GelRed and GelGreen Safety report NEW Formats for GelRed™ & GelGreen™ Biotium has made GelRed™ and GelGreen™ even better by introducing another breakthrough – GelRed™ and GelGreen™ Prestaining Kits. These kits are designed for users employing a prestaining approach to nucleic acid visualisation, where the GelRed or GelGreen are introduced as part of the loading buffer. Each new kit contains an optimally formulated 6X GelRed™ or GelGreen™ loading buffer and a superior proprietary running buffer. The kits come with a 6X loading buffer conveniently containing GelRed™ or GelGreen™ dye and electrophoresis tracking dyes. The loading buffer and running buffer formulation have been optimized for prestaining and running gels at high voltages without overheating. The blue tracking dyes will run at approximately either 50bp, or at both 1.5- 2.0Kb and 200bp in a 1% agarose gel.
