Aligned 3D Nanofiber Scaffolds

Aligned 3D Nanofiber Scaffolds

Providing an environment that closely mimics the in vivo environment for cell culture is an important part of many experiments. However, in the past cell culture has often been performed on flat, tissue culture polystyrene and it has been shown that cells behave very differently on flat, smooth substrates than they do in biological settings due to the lack of a 3D structure. Those scaffolds that do contain a 3D structure are often restricted by a too large fiber size for cells to grow along or the lack of good support for growth.

Cambridge Bioscience offers aligned 3D nanofiber scaffolds utilising a revolutionary 3D nanofiber technology from Nanofiber Solutions. The Nanofiber Solutions technology was used in the first synthetic nanofiber transplant in the world. Utilising aligned polymer nanofibers integrated into standard cell culture systems, this revolutionary technology provides researchers with more biologically realistic cell culture by mimicking the extracellular matrix that presents both aligned physical structure and mechanical support to cells such as white matter within the brain, the central nervous system, cardiac tissue, skeletal muscle and many others.

Features of the Aligned Nanofiber Scaffolds
The aligned nanofiber scaffolds offer numerous advantages over other culture devices including:
Mimics aligned & oriented parts of the body
3D topography that mimics in vivo topography
• Provides support for cell growth
• Ideal for cardiac, muscle, neuronal & white matter cell culture
Multiple formats available - well plate, chamber slide, dish & plate inserts
• Facilitates high-throughput testing
Optically transparent - enables live-cell imaging & real time quantification of cell mobility
Help control differentiation of stem cells into the desired cell type by providing appropriate physical cues
Existing system & equipment compatible - formats same general size & shape of standard cell culture dishes

Suitable Cells
These scaffolds are suitable for:
• White matter within the brain

Comparison to Other Technologies

The Nanofiber Solutions technology offers significant advantages over traditional plates, basement membrane matrices (gels) and other 3D cell culture products.

Traditional Tissue Culture Polystyrene (TCPS)
Historically, cell culture has been performed on flat, tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS). Cells have been shown to behave very differently on a flat, smooth substrate than they do in true biological settings due to the lack of a 3D structure. The Nanofiber Solutions technology provides this 3D structure.

Basement Membrane Matrices (Gels)
Basement membrane matrices often require specialized transportation or storage, introduce a third-party animal contaminant in stem cell use and cell extraction for gene and protein analyses can often be difficult from them. The Nanofiber Solutions technology solves these problems by not requiring specialized transportation or storage, not introducing a third-party animal contaminant, enabling easy cell extraction and by supplying a physical structure for cell adherence and growth.
