Thrombin is a 36kDa serine protease protein that is formed by the proteolytic cleavage of prothrombin in the first step of the coagulation cascade. Thrombin acts as a serine protease to convert soluble fibrinogen into insoluble strands of fibrin to form a mesh, stemming blood loss from injured blood vessels. Thrombin has been shown to effect normal and pathological processes, including inflammation, tissue repair, embryogenesis, angiogenesis and tumour invasion.
